Nicola has trained staff on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) awareness and given seminars on how to target and recruit LGBT foster carers and adopters.

She has also given talks at recruitment events about her experience of fostering. This includes how she uses Social Pedagogy in fostering two children aged 12 and 15.

BAAF has published two of her books about lesbian and gay adoption and fostering, Proud Parents  and The Pink Guide to Adoption.

These feature in-depth interviews with over 20 LGBT parents and carers as well as some of their children.

Nicola is a panel member for Tower Hamlets. She also sits on the Department for Education’s expert panel on improving permanence for looked after children. She wrote a paper based on her experience of fostering with recommendations for policy and practice improvements. Nicola recently joined the All Party Parliamentary Group on looked after children.

Nicola’s passion is to increase the number of LGBT people coming forward to adopt or foster and to improve the experience of foster carers and adopters.

She offers training covering:

  • research on gay and lesbian parenting – dispelling myths and fears
  • her own and other LGBT people’s experience of adopting and fostering
  •  children’s experience of being adopted or fostered by LGBT people
  • how to improve retention of foster carers

  • Social Pedagogy in fostering and adoption
