Maggie Murdoch and Paul Fairweather – Positive Parenting
Maggie and Paul have worked together as trainers, consultants, and activists since 1991. During this time they have delivered specialist training and consultancy in Equality and Fairness in the recruitment and assessment of lesbians and gay men as foster and adoptive carers to more than 10 Local Authorities and Adoption/Fostering Agencies across the North of England and hosted a national conference with over 200 participants, on this subject. They were key members of the group who instigated, researched and designed the first set of practitioner guidelines for assessment of lesbians and gay men, which was adopted by Manchester City Council (2004/2007). As a result of this successful partnership work, in 2008 Manchester was named by BAAF as the national leader in the recruitment of lesbians and gay men to foster and adopt. They were also members of the team that created: Lesbian and Gay Fostering and Adoption: Extraordinary. Yet Ordinary (Eds) Hicks and McDermott 1998. Maggie worked as a Foster Carer for several years and Paul began his career in youth work. Paul is a Local Councillor who leads on Gay Men’s issues for Manchester City Council. Both come highly recommended as trainers and have worked passionately as equality specialists in the Public and Voluntary sector for many years.
Workshop on Assessing Gay and Lesbian Foster Care and Adoption Applicants
This workshop aims to: Explore ways to achieve a fair and consistent approach in the assessment of lesbians and gay men as applicants; to highlight what gay and lesbian carers and adopters can offer to looked after children; and to identify practical ways to enhance good practice in current social work practice in this area.
The workshop will:
- Provide a legal context for current practice
- Enable participants to evaluate current practice in relation to the assessment of lesbians and gay men as applicants
- Re-visit the myths and research evidence around same sex carers
- Allow participants to familiarise themselves with Manchester City Councilâ€™s Practice Guidance on Assessing Gay and Lesbian Applicants
- Focus on the 6 core issues that can provide a practical tool and a framework for assessment
This can be run as full day or half day workshop and can be tailored to Social Work Practitioners; Managers; Panel Members.
