Janet McDermott

Janet McDermott is an Asian lesbian writer, trainer and adoptive parent living in Sheffield and employed as a Training Officer and Capacity Building Manager for a national Black Women’s Domestic Violence organisation. She was a founder member of the Northern Support Group for Lesbian and Gay Foster and Adoptive Parents in 1994 and adopted three Asian girls in 1995, 1997 and 2001 with her white partner. In 1999, with Dr Stephen Hicks of Salford University, she edited Lesbian and Gay Fostering and Adoption: Extraordinary Yet Ordinary; (pub. Jessica Kingsley, London). She has been delivering diversity training for social workers and panel members in the north of England for 15 years.

Workshop on Assessing & Supporting Lesbian and Gay Carers
This workshop aims to:

  • Cover a brief history of lesbian & gay foster care & adoption in the UK &
  • changes in policy and practice that have taken place
  • Share experiences of placement, contact and life story work
  • Identify the skills and qualities needed to develop positive identities in looked
  • after children & explore how to assess these in lesbian and gay applicants
  • Share good practice in relation to assessing, approving and matching lesbian
  • and gay carers
  • Examine myths, realities and professional values pertaining to lesbian and
  • gay parenting
  • Explore issues of diversity in general and identify particular issues for lesbian
  • and gay carers who are black, disabled, or belong to other oppressed
  • groups.

This is usually a one day workshop but can be adapted to a half day. Janet also
offers workshops on ‘Assessing Black and Ethnic Minority Carers’ and ‘Diversity
Issues in Fostering and Adoption’.
