Help in a crisis

Sometime you may need help and support in an emergency, from agencies other than the emergency services. In those times, the following contacts may be useful.

General support

The Samaritans – Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year the Samaritans can be called on 116 123 (UK) or 116 123 (ROI), numbers that are free to call.

Switchboard (the LGBT+ helpline) – Available on 0300 330 0630 Switchboard is open 10am-11pm every day. It provides an information, support and referral service for lesbians, gay men and bisexual and trans people.

Adoption/fostering support

Your local council should have a social worker who works outside office hours and their contact details can usually be found on your authority’s website.

Housing support

Shelter – Provide a free housing advice helpline on 0808 800 4444. The helpline’s open 8am – 8pm on weekdays and 8am – 5pm on weekends, 365 days a year.

Domestic violence support

National Domestic Violence Helpline – Run in partnership between Refuge and Women’s Aid, this helpline is available on 0808 2000 247. It’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is open to women and children experiencing – or who have experienced – domestic abuse.

National LGBT Domestic Abuse Helpline – Available on 0800 999 5428 this helpline provides confidential support to all members of the LGBT communities, their family, friends, and agencies supporting them. Check the website for opening hours.
